As part of the INVEST Deutschland funding program, the Übersee-Museum Bremen has received funding to make its natural history collections available online to both researchers and the general public. With this funding, we are developing procedures and standards for in-house digitization, particularly high-resolution 2D digitization, as well as the digitization of larger collections of objects, such as insect boxes.

Structuring Metadata

One important task of our project has been to consider and implement requirements for a database-based inventory of all parts of the natural history collections. To achieve this goal, we have joined the Dina consortium. Various parties involved with natural history collections are jointly developing the Dina system to provide an openly usable, modular and innovative database platform.

About the Dina System

In addition, as part of the project, we have now acquired and put into operation imaging equipment – that is, equipment for creating digital images. The collection data will be shared online via portals with other researchers in the field of biology. The online presentation will also include links to information from our other collections: ethnographic and commercial collections, as well as our historical image archive.
