The social neutrality of museums has been increasingly called into question for years. While the goal in recent decades has been to establish the museum as a neutral space for everyone, there is now a demand for it to take a clear stance: What values does the institution stand for? What position does it take on major sociopolitical debates?
A Museum for Everyone
Research from the United States suggests that a museum must not compromise its scholarly integrity or, figuratively speaking, become a political activist: museums enjoy a high level of trust among the public. Visitors assume that what is on display reflects the realities in question.
Our challenge in the coming years will be to take a stand without compromising our commitment to being a “museum for everyone.” The Übersee-Museum has developed a vision for the future that incorporates new, innovative approaches. The museum also aims to be a place for social discourse and, through its exhibitions and presentations, to serve as a “third place” for its visitors – alongside work and home – where they can linger, stroll, and relax. The Übersee-Museum aims to be both familiar and surprising. With its atmosphere and spacious architecture, it is destined to become Bremen’s “living room.”
