The Übersee-Museum offers a unique experience featuring a combination of ethnology, commercial history, and natural history – a collection unlike any other in Europe. Distant continents have always fascinated travelers and those who stay at home alike. As early as 130 years ago, the Übersee-Museum presented “The World Under One Roof,” and to this day it continues to set standards with its modern exhibition formats. As our guest, you decide: colorful birds in Hawaii, shoguns in Tokyo, herds of buffalo in the Midwest – the connoisseur takes a closer look, the leisurely visitor lets themselves be carried away, and everyone under 16 is free to run around and marvel.

The “third place” is a social space beyond one’s own home or workplace. It is both familiar and surprising. With its unique atmosphere and spacious architecture, the Übersee-Museum aims to be a “living room for society.” At the Übersee-Museum, you can spend hours poring over exhibit panels or simply enjoy a cappuccino at the Afrika-Café, marvel at drawers full of butterflies in the display case, or enjoy a picnic you’ve brought along in the Oceania section – we’re all about science and wellness!

The Übersee-Museum has been nominated several times for the European Museum Prize and won the 2026 German Design Award for its new special exhibition, “The Blue Continent – Islands in the Pacific.” The permanent exhibition “What makes the world go round” was honored by the German UNESCO Commission as a project of the UN Decade of “Education for Sustainable Development.”
