This exhibition at the Übersee-Museum shines a spotlight on a diverse continent, revealing new and sometimes astonishing aspects. Daily life in Kenya, savanna landscapes, sarcophagi from Egypt, an African disco, and the origins of humankind – the exhibition presents Africa from many different perspectives, offering diverse insights into both contemporary and historical Africa.
Life in the vibrant metropolis of Nairobi, Africa’s fascinating natural landscapes and abundance of natural resources, the continent’s eventful history, and, last but not least, the human condition are the central themes of this exhibition. But there is even more to discover on this journey through these five sections. The works of contemporary African artists reflect these themes while simultaneously raising new questions.
Who’s hiding in the bushes? Who’s picking the bugs off the rhino’s skin? Is that a maned sheep? The art of the diorama – the illusion of a landscape featuring taxidermied animals – has been one of our signature specialties since the Übersee-Museum was founded. Lion families after the hunt, giraffes standing with their legs spread wide at the watering hole, forest antelopes contentedly ruminating – just let yourself drift away and gaze into the eyes of nature!
