With the new exhibition on Oceania, the Pacific Islands have now found a home at the Übersee-Museum. Together with scientists and project partners from Oceania, we showcase the diversity, splendor, and threats facing this region of the world.
Identity: Ta tau – that’s the tapping sound of tattooing tools from Samoa. For us, it’s primarily body art – for the Samoans, it’s their ever-present, wearable homeland. Explained in a wonderfully poetic way at the Übersee-Museum, but you can also see it painlessly on your own skin!
Climate Change: We Won’t Go Down Without a Fight: In Europe, climate change means a mild winter; in the Pacific, it’s a matter of survival – as told by the “Pacific Climate Warriors.”
Colonies and Trade: The Coconut’s Long Journey: It is the epitome of “South Sea romance” – but also a commodity, a building material, the stuff of legends, food for the palm thief, and a part of colonial history. The German colonies and the museum’s associated collection history, in turn, form a distinct part of the exhibition concept.
Navigation and Seafaring: The peoples of the Pacific were considered the world’s finest seafarers. The exhibition shows how they were able to navigate over long distances by reading the stars, waves, and winds using

Not a catalog this time – a magazine! Entertaining, surprising, curious and with stories that go far beyond the exhibition. 18 authors from Samoa, Germany and all over the world have compiled their knowledge and enthusiasm for the blue continent in this magazine.
