How are colonial violence, looted cultural artifacts, and partnership projects connected? The exhibition at the Kabinett Übersee explores this question and sheds light on the eventful history between the Cameroonian city of Tibati and Bremen.
… was highly sought after in colonial Cameroon. In 1899, following conflicts over this very ivory, the town of Tibati was looted and burned to the ground by German colonial troops. Part of the loot found its way into the collection of the Übersee-Museum in 1902. Since 2018, Tibati, the Übersee-Museum, and the city of Bremen have been working together to address this colonial injustice. This collaboration has sparked ideas for joint projects, such as new methods of honey production in northern Cameroon.
The exhibition presents historical artifacts, photographs, and infographics on the history of Tibati, while also illustrating how new forms of cooperation are emerging from a history of colonial violence. The focus is on current issues: What is the status of the projects? What is the significance of the restitution of colonial objects, and how can we shape a shared future?
