Cabinet exhibition “Disguise & Deception – The Butterfly Code”

February 6 to May 31, 2026

Do you speak butterfly? We decipher the butterfly code of camouflage, deception and boasting.

Simply become transparent like the glass-winged butterfly, wear camouflage like the oleander moth or imitate two snake heads as an atlas moth – only those who skillfully disguise themselves will make it to mating alive. And even then, it’s all about being magnificent in form and color, whether morpho butterfly, peacock butterfly or swallowtail. The trick of the morpho butterfly: inconspicuously brown with eye spots on the underside of the wings and well hidden in the jungle foliage, but proudly showing itself from above in iridescent blue and a wide wingspan for the females – two butterflies in one!

Learn the language of butterflies in the new cabinet exhibition at the Übersee-Museum Bremen – next summer will be a
completely different one!
