Cabinet exhibition “Living Things – The Tlingit Collection from Alaska”

February 21 to November 23, 2025

In cooperation with the Sealaska Heritage Institute

The Übersee-Museum presents the fascinating culture of the Tlingit from South East Alaska. The focus is on the Bremen Tlingit collection, one of the oldest in the museum, which was originally intended to document a culture that was thought to be dying out. Today, however, the Tlingit culture is experiencing a new heyday. The exhibition provides an insight into the traditions of the Tlingit. Highlights of the collection are on display, explained by the Tlingit in audio and film stations, as well as the staging of a clan house and original diaries and letters from the collectors.

In close cooperation with Tlingit representatives and the Sealaska Heritage Institute, a unique picture of the cultural heritage of this community is being created. The Tlingit objects carry the spirits of the ancestors and connect the living with their ancestors. Experience the power of this living culture!

Selected objects from the collections

The Tlingit collection is one of the earliest collections of the Übersee-Museum Bremen. It was acquired mainly by Bernhard Bendel and the brothers Aurel and Arthur Krause. The Krause collection in particular enjoys great international recognition. The collection covers all aspects of Tlingit culture, including fishing gear, canoe paddles, warrior equipment, ceremonial objects, pipe bowls, feast bowls and woven baskets.
