In cooperation between the Übersee-Museum and the state institute for school, “Karibu Afrika! – Welcome to Africa,” a handout for elementary schools, was created. It supports teachers in using the Africa exhibition at the Übersee-Museum as an out-of-school learning venue. The use of modern media and methods also helps the students to expand their competencies.

The handout “Karibu Africa! – Welcome to Africa” is available at the Übersee-Museum as a brochure for 5,- € and can be downloaded here.

Secondary level I & II

Planting a Milpa

Many useful plants originate from Central America and have conquered the world from here. Maize, beans and pumpkins are often planted together in one field by the Indian farmers. The beans can grow up the maize and supply the soil with nitrogen. This is an important nutrient that plants need to grow. The large pumpkin leaves shade the soil and thus protect it from drying out. This is really good teamwork and the people are happy too. You can harvest different kinds of vegetables from a small field. Even the Maya and Aztecs grew vegetables this way. These fields are called milpa. The plants for a typical milpa also grow in our climate.

Try it out for yourself and grow your own milpa with the help of the Maki Club’s instructions!
