Discovering the nature of distant countries, their inhabitants and their culture: at the Übersee-Museum, this means that students can research, listen, touch, try out and use new knowledge in an age-appropriate way. The variety of topics of the educational offers is large. Below is an excerpt of the offerings for elementary schools. The museum education team will be happy to inform you about further possibilities.
1st – 4th grade, duration: 60 minutes
Eye to eye with a tiger, kangaroo or an African ostrich? The special exhibition focuses on animals from all over the world! On the tour, schoolchildren learn about the ways in which insects, reptiles, birds and mammals give birth to their offspring. What is the importance of brood care? How important is learning? And when are animals actually adults?

The tour through the small special exhibition provides an insight into the colourful habitat of tropical coral reefs. In addition to the special features of these habitats, the threats to which the reefs are exposed are addressed and shown how they can be protected.

This expedition through the Übersee-Museum focuses on special animals and their habitats. Many exciting questions will be answered during the guided tour: what makes corals very special creatures? Are all fish mute? Are there mammals from the egg? In the rainforest, the group searches for special features and listens to animal sounds together!
With action: making an amulet as a souvenir
For 2nd – 4th grade, duration: 60 and 90 minutes
Whether Gong, Kenong, Saron or Bonang – playing the instruments of a Gamelan orchestra from Java is easy to learn and especially fun in a group. The students will work on the basic features of an Indonesian piece of music on the original instruments of the museum. The focus is on ensemble playing. Previous experience is not required.

India – that means fascinating colors, exotic smells, its own music and art styles, foreign religions and of course Bollywood. On a guided tour of the Übersee-Museum’s “Asia” exhibition, students discover interesting facts about the nature and culture of this country.

The American double continent is characterized by migration of plants, animals and humans, as well as their adaptation to climate, seasons, nature and environment. On a guided tour, the group explores habitats such as the Amazon rainforest, the prairies of North America, the Andes Mountains, or a mining town from the perspective of the various inhabitants and immigrants who have made them their own. Resources, crops, religion, festivals and everyday life or global trade relations also demonstrate the influences of America on Bremen.

Almost half of Africans now live in cities, and rural areas are changing as a result. Individual biographies of people in rural and urban life in Kenya report on the current situation in housing, education, transport, rural life, music and fashion.

The focus is on the large and small animals of the African savannah such as rhinoceros, lion and giraffe, but also the elephant shrew. When it comes to deserts, the question arises: how do humans and animals manage to survive in this seemingly hostile landscape?

Where does music actually come from? When and why do people make music? This tour through the exhibitions “Oceania” and “Asia” of the Übersee-Museum will be accompanied by drumming and singing. With the help of their respective music, students learn about the lives and beliefs of some of the inhabitants of these continents. Music to celebrate, to mourn or to encourage.
