The Blue continent – Islands in the Pacific

New permanent exhibition from March 29, 2025

From March 29, 2025, the Übersee-Museum will be home to the island world of the Pacific. Together with scientists and project partners from Oceania, we will be showing the diversity, splendor and threats of this region of the world.

Looking forward to it? Dive in!

Ta tau – that’s the tapping sound of tattooing tools from Samoa. For us it’s mainly body jewelry – for the Samoans it’s an ever-present, worn homeland. Explained wonderfully poetically in the Übersee-Museum, but also painless to see on your own skin!

We’re not going under – we’re fighting: In Europe, climate change is a mild winter, in the Pacific it’s a question of survival – told by the “Pacific Climate Warriors”.

The long journey of the coconut: it is the epitome of “South Seas romance” – but also a commodity, building material, the stuff of legends, food for the palm thief and part of colonial history. Freshly fallen from the tree in the Übersee-Museum, floating and floating in the room with all its stories.

The magazine accompanying the exhibition

Not a catalog this time – a magazine! Entertaining, surprising, curious and with stories that go far beyond the exhibition. 18 authors from Samoa, Germany and all over the world have compiled their knowledge and enthusiasm for the blue continent in this magazine.

9,90 €, available in the museum store

Dialogue, perspectives and insights around
the Pacific region

When a new room, a new permanent exhibition is created at the Übersee-Museum, the idea, the concept and the “making of” are at least as interesting as the end product. From the collaboration with our colleagues in Samoa to the idea of a digital platform with first-hand information and the return of an artistic boat stem, here are the stories behind the showcases and stagings.
