Discovering the nature of distant countries, their inhabitants and their culture: at the Übersee-Museum, this means that students can research, listen, touch, try out and use new knowledge in an age-appropriate way. The variety of topics of the educational offers is large. Below you will find a small excerpt of the offers for the secondary level II. The museum education team will be happy to inform you about further possibilities.

The tour through the small special exhibition focuses on the importance of tropical coral reefs for oceans and people. In addition to the ecology of these ecosystems, the global and local threats facing the reefs are addressed. In addition, protective mechanisms and one’s own responsibility are discussed.

After a brief general introduction to the concept and history of colonialism, the focus will be on German colonial rule. Among other things, the genocide of the Herero and its consequences as well as the political situation in Kamerun at the “time of the Germans” are discussed. References are made to the past of the museum as well as Bremen.

The America of the 21st century, the differences between North and Latin America in politics, economy, and culture, as well as the formative power of religion, are explained in the context of the various waves of immigration since 1492. A retrospective look at the geological and climatic changes shows, however, that internal migrations have also had a major impact on the development of the habitats of the animal and plant world. The exhibition area Immigration is followed by the thematic complexes Religion, Politics and Society, and World Trade. Finally, domestic American issues are considered in their global implications.

Whether Gong, Kenong, Saron or Bonang – playing the instruments of a Gamelan orchestra from Java is easy to learn and especially fun in a group. The students will work on the basic features of an Indonesian piece of music on the original instruments of the museum. The focus is on ensemble playing. Previous experience is not required.

This tour focuses on issues and problems of globalization. Seven themes challenge students to address “World-changing issues” that concern humanity around the globe. These include “Climate change,” “Communication,” “Sex and gender,” “Time,” “Human rights,” “Migration,” and “Global economy.” Afterwards, games and interactive research stations invite visitors to explore interesting topics in more detail.

After an introduction to the history of the house and its exhibition concepts, students learn about the permanent exhibitions. “Oceania”, “Asia”, “Africa” and “What makes the world go round” invite you to collect impressions from overseas. The tour will include topics such as “Effects of Colonialism” as well as “Adaptation to a habitat.”
